Steele says deal with Ottawa prevents move

The NDP has abandoned its call while in opposition to remove the province’s portion of the sales tax charged on the motive fuel tax. Consumers pay a 15.5 cent per litre flat motive tax on each litre of gasoline, and the 15 per cent harmonized sales tax is charged on top of that. Ottawa levies a 10 cent per litre excise tax.

"We didn’t realize when we were in opposition — I’ll certainly say that quite openly and honestly — I didn’t realize that the reason why it’s done the way it is, is because of the tax collection agreement with the federal government," Steele said.

What a stinkin' liar! He expects people to believe that? Come on. Even if he initially believed it a member of government would have pointed it out to him. And he is saying he was demanding an action without even knowing anything about the ramifications. What does he take us for. Course he is the same guy who went around the Province with his little buddy dexter promising not to raise taxes once in power. McNeil told him at every stop he couldn't do it and he was right. Dexter and Steele were lying thru their teeth just as they are now.

Considering the province was able to remove its portion of the HST charged on home heating fuel, it would seem there's a method to fulfill what used to be a NDP demand
