Jack Layton has a serious illness but will announce today he is staying on as leader of the federal New Democratic Party, the Toronto Star has learned.

CBC is reporting that Layton will announce that doctors have diagnosed him with prostate cancer, which is one of the more treatable forms of cancer.

Sources say the 59-year-old Layton’s personal health is not good. Layton has been leader for seven years.

Layton had been complaining of a sore back from what he thought was a strained muscle from working out at the gym.

“It’s more than that,” a source told the Star.

I don't care for the man as a politician but I wouldn't wish this on anyone. Good luck to him in his battle and I will hope he comes out of it in fighting form and able to resume his duties. I note he has begun his treatment and I assume it is in Canada. Good on Mr. Layton.

I too wish him a full recovery.

And that's the end of that. Too bad Danny couldn't have conferred with Layton and we wouldn't be having the other longer discussion....

Regardless of the petty politics of where he gets treatment, may he over come the disease and may he be stronger for it box
